LA CARE, or Local Initiative Health Authority for Los Angeles County, is a public agency that provides health insurance for low-income and other vulnerable residents of Los Angeles County. Over the years, I’ve been fortunate to create videos for them in several languages, including American Sign Language. Directing for them was a great experience, and they were wonderful to work with.

https://giannifava.org/dzuyavbfa6 As of January, 2023, the videos remain on LA CARE’s website and Youtube page. My work for them included

  • – script assistance and consultation
  • – producing, directing, and editing for all versions, as well as cinematography for several of the videos
  • – recording voiceover and subtitling in 14 languages
  • – photography for series cover art
  • – output for DVD, web and social media

My first production for them was in 2011. It was a series of three videos in American Sign Language featuring deaf actor Shoshannah Stern. Not only was it wonderful to work with a pro like Shoshannah, but it was also a great learning experience to direct, edit and subtitle a project in American Sign Language. In addition, LA Care wanted to offer the videos to its Spanish-speaking audiences, so we recorded and subtitled a Spanish version. A sample of the Spanish version is included in the video gallery above.

In 2013, LA Care decided to adapt the script for their Asian constituents. We re-shot parts of the script with an Asian-American host, and also shot several interviews and testimonials in Mandarin Chinese. In addition, we recorded voiceover for Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese, Tagalog and Cambodian. A Tagalog example is included in the video gallery above.

In 2016, LA Care decided to expand the languages and audiences reached. Again, we re-shot of the script with a new host and we recorded and edited the videos in Arabic, Armenian, Farsi and Russian.
