Abandoned America: The Dunes Motel on Route 66 Near Barstow, CA

with No Comments

I first visited the Dunes Motel in August 2017.  I had been doing some lightpainting in the Antelope Valley, and was returning home via Barstow and National Trails Highway, aka the Mother Road aka Route 66.  The Dunes Motel is a complex of four buildings and a swimming pool that lies just southwest of Barstow.  Seeing it for the first time late at night under a partial moon, it was, admittedly, a bit creepy.  There were, of course, no lights, and my flashlight only revealed bits and pieces of empty rooms and graffiti walls.

In February 2018, I traversed Route 66 again, this time during the day.  Just off the highway, you can see the make-shift sign and distinctive palms trees.

The windows had been boarded up, and graffiti covered the boards.  Here’s the view to the left.

And the view to the right.  I wish I had been able to photograph the property without the boards on the windows.  Oh well…

Last time, I missed the pool, but was able to take a better look this time.  The chair doesn’t look that old.

I’m sure I’ll revisit this motel some day.
